Early life, education and career

Peterson was born on June 12, 1962, in Alberta and was raised in the small town of Fairview. He was an avid reader from the start and developed a keen interest in global affairs, especially the Cold War, during his teenage years.

After his graduation in 1979 from Fairview High School, Peterson took up post-secondary studies at Grande Prairie Regional College. In 1982, he completed a BA in political science from the University of Alberta. He then took a year off to travel through Europe, a journey that sparked his interest in psychology, mythology and totalitarian.

Peterson then returned to Alberta to earn a second BA in psychology in 1984. In 1991, he earned his PhD in clinical psychology from McGill University.

Peterson’s academic career started as an assistant professor at Harvard University from 1993 to 1998. In 1998, he returned to Canada and joined as a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto.

Peterson married Tammy Roberts in 1989, and the couple has a daughter (Mikhaila) and a son (Julian)

Jordan Peterson rise as an international celebrity

Peterson gained international fame in 2016 after he publicly opposed Canada’s Bill C-16, arguing that the bill would mandate the use of gender-neutral pronouns. He gained significant media coverage for his stance on C-16, and those in support tagged him as a defender of free speech.

Peterson leveraged the limelight he got because of C-16 to build a large following through social media posts, interviews and lectures. In 2018, he even published a book, called 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, to further capitalize on his growing popularity.

Peterson released another book in 2021, called Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life, and also launched The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast. At the same time, he also continued with his lectures, interviews and tours to connect with his followers physically and across social media platforms (YouTube, Spotify, and other platforms)

Peterson even came up with a set of online writing programs, called Self Authoring Suite, to assist users in organizing their past, present, and future for therapeutic sessions. In 2022, he partnered with The Daily Wire, a conservative media company, for content distribution. The deal further expanded his political reach.

Peterson suffered health issues in 2019 and half of 2020, but was back to normal in June 2020. Even this year, Peterson was ill spent about a month in intensive care and had ‘near death’ experience after he was hospitalized this summer for pneumonia and sepsis, Mikhaila Fuller (Peterson’s daughter) detailed in a YouTube video.

Mikhaila said her father had been diagnosed with CIRS (chronic inflammatory response syndrome), and confirmed that he is slowly recovering, but no definite timeline has been provided for his full return to public engagements.

Peterson presently lives in Arizona (relocated from Canada in late 2024), and has put his Toronto home for sale for almost $2.3 million.

Peterson’s controversies

Peterson has been involved in several controversies, mainly due to his public statements on gender issues and criticism of public policies. It can also be said that controversies have helped Peterson get popular and, in turn, build his wealth. Some of Peterson’s most popular controversies are:

  • ·Peterson’s criticism of Canada’s C-16 bill was his earliest and most well-known controversies in 2016. The law made gender identity and gender expression mandatory as protected grounds in human rights law, but Peterson argued that it breaches free speech by forcing people to use preferred pronouns.

  • Peterson’s remarks on gender relations and feminism have also regularly landed him in trouble. On several occasions, the scholar noted that the gender pay gap and differences in career choices is mainly due to biological differences and women’s higher levels of “agreeableness.” Furthermore, his comments on transgender people, including comparing gender-affirming care to Nazi medical experiments, drew widespread criticism.

  • More recently, he has been involved in a years-long legal battle with the College of Psychologists of Ontario over multiple complaints received by the latter over Peterson’s harsh posts on social media. In August 2024, Canada’s Supreme Court dismissed Peterson’s final appeal and upheld the college’s decision that Peterson take up a remedial social media training program.
